Flu Shots Are Now Available -  Get One Right Away!

Flu shots are influenza vaccines that can prevent you from getting the flu. If you get the flu, in spite of having the shot, the vaccine often makes it less dangerous. Doctors are saying the influenza vaccine is very important to get this fall, while the COVID-19 pandemic is surging across the country.

If you or your family need food, housing, or other non-medical assistance, please contact Alaska 2-1-1 (dial 211 or 800-478-2221) or your local emergency operations center for help. If you have a medical emergency call 911.

Dr. Joe McLaughlin, Alaska's Chief Epidemiologist, talked about the flu shots. Here is a summary of what he said from the Country Journal's notes:

  • You just need one flu shot per year.
  • You should get it in the fall.
  • The immunity the flu shot provides wanes over time and you are more strongly protected about two weeks after you take it.
  • Flu season in Alaska varies but in general it starts in October, spreads statewide in November and December and often peaks in January and February and sometimes as late as March.
  • The best time to get a flu shot is some time in October.

From Wikipedia:     Influenza vaccines, also known as flu shots or flu jabs, are vaccines that protect against infection by influenza viruses. New versions of the vaccines are developed twice a year, as the influenza virus rapidly changes. While their effectiveness varies from year to year, most provide modest to high protection against influenza.
