The State Of Alaska Epidemiology Department sent out two bulletins on October 29th that showed that just the fact of being Alaska Native, Asian, Pacific Islander or Black puts you in the highest categories of being hospitalized – or even dying  from Covid-19 in Alaska.

The shocking news showed that 36% of all Covid-19 deaths in the state, from January 1st through October 15th, were Native Americans. A total of 24 Alaska Natives have died in that time the report said – of the 73 Alaskans who have perished on account of the virus.

The same number of White people in Alaska have also died – 25 victims. The difference, though, is that there are many more White Alaskans than Native Americans in Alaska. Almost 64% of all Alaskans are classified as "non-Hispanic White." Only 15% of Alaskans are American Indian or Native American.

The Covid hospitalization rates for Native Americans were distressing, too. A total of 32% of all Alaskans hospitalized since the pandemic arrived in Alaska were Native Americans. Of the 445 people hospitalized between January and October 15th,  117 were Native.

The most vulnerable population, though, per capita, are Alaska Pacific Islanders the report said.

The most likely people to die or to be hospitalized in Alaska for Covid-19 are 50 years and older, regardless of race.
