Copper Valley Suddenly Hit Hard By Virus

34 Active Local Cases Added In Only 20 Days

The Copper River Valley, with its small population of only around 3,000 people, is getting clobbered by COVID-19. As of October 30th, 86 local people throughout the region had  tested positive for the virus. This is a very big jump from last week's total: 67 locals struck ill with COVID-19 during the pandemic.

For weeks, the number of people living here who contracted the virus remained zero. Then cases began a very slow rise, and numbers began to accelerate after July 4th.

Coronavirus in Copper River Country is now in a full gallop. In the past 20 days, according to the Copper River Native Association, there have been 34 new active cases of the deadly disease.

CRNA estimates that there have been 19 new positive cases in the past seven days – from October 24th to October 30th – more than two new cases diagnosed every single day, as people in cabins and homes all over the valley come down ill.

The addition of 34 cases in such a short period of time is in keeping with Alaskan and national trends, which show exponential growth of the virus. Deadly records are being set daily at the end of October, with a troubling new incident of rapidly growing cases in the more "remote" and lonely states – such as Montana, South Dakota, North Dakota and Alaska.

That large number of cases in our region is well outside the typical weekly growth numbers we've been experiencing up to now. The biggest growth in cases here in the Copper Valley was when we got 10 new sick people over 7 days, and that was several weeks ago.

Note: CRNA's data on its Facebook site originally said on October 30th there were 85 total cases. But CRNA showed an added 19th positive case for the week by the end of the day. Only an hour or so before, the Facebook site had registered 18 new cases, and 85 total residents with Covid-19. So the number went up by one by the end of  Friday, October 30th. This story is abridged, to reflect that 86th case.
