Alaska's Governor Extends Emergency Disaster Declaration

Governor Dunleavy at Friday's Press Conference

On Friday, November 6th, at 6 pm, Governor Dunleavy held a press conference in which he announced he will ask for a 30 day extension of the Alaska's Emergency Declaration.

He started the press briefing with a recognition of the importance of keeping the virus under control during the upcoming holiday season. He later stressed the danger of putting too much pressure on hospital capacity, emergency workers, police and the military. He asked Alaskans to wear masks and to be careful how they conduct business. He didn't issue any new mandates for persons or businesses. Here is a summary of points he made:

Governor asks people to adjust how they do business.

The governor said that with cases increasing every week "in the end the numbers are going to work against us...what I'm asking you to do is to do as much business on the phone [as you can]... do takeout."

Governor asks people to wear masks.

The governor continued, "If you've gotta go into a business I'm asking you to wear a mask. I'm asking businesses to require a mask."

Governor says we've got to slow this down.

He said, "I'm asking people to not congregate in groups... we've got to slow this down... [if cases keep increasing] the mathematics is clearly going to demonstrate that we will overwhelm our hospital system."

Governor says our behavior is going to buy us time.

The governor wrapped up by saying, "I want us all to work together... readjust how we do things so we can get through the next two months... Our behavior is going to buy us a little more time... I'm asking you... I'm imploring you... that we all need to do a little better, including myself, when it comes to wearing a mask – when it comes to doing business via distance – when it comes to limiting my interactions with others."
