Dr. Michael Osterholm from the University of Minnesota said this week that the new SARS-CoV-2 variant has probably been in Minnesota at least since December. This new mutation of the COVID-19 virus is rampant in parts of Europe and has led to a surge in new cases because it is much easier to catch.

He said the danger for the United States from this new, very easy to catch strain "could enhance transmission substantially over the course of the next weeks or months. We are in a race between the virus and the vaccine."

Already many parts of the country are experiencing overloaded health care facilities.
