Glacier View School Switches To At-Home Learning

Following the lead of the Mat-Su School District's Butte Elementary, Glacier View School at Mile 104 of the Glenn Highway has gone to off-site learning due to infections.  It's the second Mat-Su Borough to have to close. And the school year has just barely gotten off the ground.

The reason is explained on the Mat-Su District website:

August 30, 2021

Dear Glacier View School Families,
Due to multiple outbreaks and community transmission, Glacier View school building will be closed and students will participate in At-Home Learning beginning Tuesday, August 31 through Friday, September 3. Your child’s teacher(s) will reach out on Tuesday to begin At-home Learning.

All before and after school activities are canceled during this short-term building closure.

An update on this building closure will be provided no later than Monday, September 6, which is the Labor Day Holiday, so school will not be in session.

On August 30th, the Mat-Su school district website said that 30 Covid cases had hit Butte Elementary. Two cases were known at Glacier View – all in the past 7 days. Considering Glacier View's tiny population, even two is a lot. Glacier View is located between the Matanuska Glacier and Sheep Mountain. It covers around 450 square miles, and has a population of only around 250 people.

Landmarks in Glacier View on the upper Glenn Highway include Matanuska Glacier (Mile 102 Glenn): Long Rifle Lodge (Mile 102); Grand View (Mile 109.5); Sheep Mountain Lodge (113.5).  The community is a gateway community at the entrance to the Copper River Valley.

Ketchikan & Anchorage Schools Also Struggle

Ketchikan High just closed too, due to Covid. And in Anchorage, the district website says that Fire Lake Elementary has a classroom that's transitioned to online learning for 8 days. Anchorage's Eagle Academy Charter School has a classroom transitioned to a week of online learning. And Birchwood Elementary is going to online learning for 10 days.
