Region Is Now Experiencing A Major Surge, With Cases Skyrocketing

Covid Sweeps Through Copper River Valley

In these past 19 months, there have been four clearly identifiable trends visible as the pandemic ramped up in the Copper Valley. The first months from the beginning of the pandemic, cases stayed relatively low, only reaching the 100 mark by November 20th, 2020.

Then, in the 2020 holiday season, 100 new cases were added, bringing the total to 200 infected local people.

As the Copper Valley began to get vaccinated at the beginning of 2021, the rate of infection slowed down and it took 5 months to reach 300 total cases in the region.

Since the past July 4th, however, with the arrival of the delta variant, local cases have gone rapidly from 300 to 600 in only three and a half months, as schools opened across the state. This surge is not limited to the Copper Valley. Deaths and hospitalizations across Alaska have propelled Alaska to national news as experiencing the worst Covid outbreak in America, and even the world.

On the CRNA chart above, the Copper River Country Journal has overlayed four color blocks marking four periods. The first three note each 100-person infection period. The fourth (red) block shows how the community's cases have doubled recently.

The red line indicates the community's overall cases during the time of the pandemic.

Light gray lines on the chart show the number of total cases in 100-person increments. (This makes the Covid situation easier to see by counting how long it took to get to each 100-person benchmark.)

The Country Journal's analysis periods shown are "Green," "Yellow," "Orange," and "Red."

The "Green" period shows the first 100 cases in the Copper Valley. The "Yellow" period shows the second 100 cases. The "Orange" period shows the third 100 cases. And the "Red" period shows the huge, unbridled 300-case surge that has recently occurred in the past three and a half months.
