Anchorage Schools Deal With Bus Driver Shortage, School Teacher Woes & Up To $100 Million Budget Deficit

An alarming story on KTUU on August 17th told of "dire" problems with the Anchorage School District.

The district budget expects a $60 to $100 million budget shortfall, the superintendent is quoted as saying. The superintendent says some schools may even have to close.

KTUU reported the district is getting 50 new bus drivers, but "that still won't be enough." The district superintendent discussed parental car pooling as a solution.

He also spoke of "gas cards and free city bus passes."

The district, faced with bus driver issues, has gone to a 3-week on 6-week off bus schedule that has left parents scrambling.
