Some Students Will Take People Mover Buses To School
There are so few bus drivers now in Anchorage that the district can only serve 7,000 of its 20,000 student bus riders at any one time.
According to a story in the Anchorage Daily News, bus service will be available for 3 weeks, followed by 6 weeks without buses, as the district rolls through its service schedules with limited staff.
In the winter, many parts of Anchorage have difficult walking, due to lack of sidewalks, or poorly maintained edges of the road. The city also has many of the problems of all big cities, including predators on the lookout for unsupervised children. During much of the school year, it's winter – and dark much of the day. The district told the ADN it was short 71 bus drivers.
