Glennallen Takes Second In Championship Round At State Tournament

Fighting right to the end for the title of State 2A Champions the Glennallen Panthers were overpowered in the second half by the Seward Seahawks. Glennallen went down 42 to 26.
For two years in a row the Panthers have reached the championship game and come face to face with the Seward team. The Seward High School lists having 173 students on its website, while Glennallen lists 86 students in grades six through 12.
As Metlakatla found out Friday night, bigger schools with deeper benches can wear down the high spirited and gritty playing that marks the small schools that rise to this level.
The Glennallen team can be justifiably proud of its accomplishments the last two years. As KCAM's great announcer, Greg Lewis, summed it up: "They fought them hard!"

Metlakatla is a community near Ketchikan with a population of about 1,300. Seward, of course, is a much bigger community with a population of about 2,900 and its high school website says they have 173 students.

Anchorage, Alaska
The Glennallen Panthers took control of the floor from the start and early on led Unalakleet fourteen to zero. There was never much suspense, as Glennallen never lost composure and methodically kept control of the court.
They were excellent at handling the ball and passing. It was a real show of selflessness, as the team passed the ball relentlessly waiting for a good opportunity to shoot.
The final score could have been much higher, but there was no hurrying this team as they demonstrated their considerable skill.
