Gulkana Offers Free Month's Worth Of Water For Every Month's Timely Payment Of Water Bill

The village of Gulkana is offering a free water service payment program to help Gulkana residents pay their water utility bills during the pandemic. The program runs from June 2020 to October 2020.

For every month between now and October, a Gulkana resident who has paid their summer/fall bills on time will be given one free month of water service over the winter/spring between November 2020 and March 2021, for every month paid.

Gulkana has one of the most sophisticated water systems in the region. In the summer of 1992, a 100,000 gallon village water storage tank was installed by the Public Health Service, with local workers, near the entrance to Gulkana. The new water tank was meant as a "cushion" to provide water if there were problems with the existing village water system, which operated off of a longtime well. The tank was insulated with 5 inches of insulation. The Country Journal took a photo of Gulkana Village workers at the time, in September, 1992.

From left to right the people in this 1992 photo are: Frank George, Harry Ewan, Penny Ewan, Larry Ewan, Ron Frank and Patrick Johnny. A copy of the Journal photo now hangs in the Gulkana village offices.
