Sleeping Gulkana Woman Assaulted By Masked Man Wielding An Axe

Just before 5 am on Wednesday, June 9th, a Gulkana women called 911 to report that a man had entered her house and assaulted her with a hatchet.

Troopers said in a daily report that she told them she was sleeping in bed when the man struck her on the head with the small axe, waking her up. Her 14 year old son helped her fight off the assaulter.

State Troopers and Village Public Safety Officers immediately responded to the scene and were able to find a suspect – 29 year old Rodney Stevens of Glennallen.

Troopers said the Stevens was arrested and charged with Attempted M
urder, Burglary 1 and Assault 1.

According to a story in the Anchorage Daily News, Sgt. Wallace Kirksey wrote in "a sworn affidavit" that the man did not speak to the victim or tell her why she was being attacked. The ADN said, "She stated she thought she was fighting for her life and thought he was going to kill her." The statement said the man was gone when they got there and that "a small hatchet" was left behind in the woman's bed, and that she needed medical care, according to the Anchorage Daily News report.

Troopers apparently used surveillance footage to pinpoint Rodney Stevens' car, and Troopers believed that Stevens was related to the victim.
