Ben and Stephanie Carlton of Gakona Junction are about to launch into a new phase of their lives. They'll soon be opening a year-round Subway restaurant near the school road and across from the IGA in downtown Glennallen.
Ben is working on the interior of the building, which has not been used for many years. If you drive by, you'll see the banner on the outside of the new restaurant.
The new Subway is being built to spec inside, and will have booths for over 30 diners.
Subway is the only franchising restaurant chain in rural Alaska outside of major urban centers. There are Subway restaurants in Valdez, Soldotna, Seward, Homer, at the Talkeetna Junction, in Kenai and on the boardwalk at Denali National Park – as well as in larger cities in Alaska, including Juneau, Barrow, Fairbanks, North Pole, Nome, Sitka, Ketchikan, Kodiak and Palmer.
Two Subways in the state are seasonal: the restaurants in Dillingham and Denali.
