Three Injured, One Killed In Mile 298 Richardson Accident

On March 2, 2022, at approximately 8:40 am, the Alaska State Troopers were notified of a two-vehicle collision near mile 298 of the Richardson Highway.
Alaska State Troopers and volunteer fire and EMS immediately responded to the scene. A preliminary investigation revealed that a pickup truck was driving northbound on the Richardson Highway when the driver lost control and collided head-on with an SUV.
The adult male driver, and sole occupant, of the pickup truck, received injuries and was transported to a Fairbanks area hospital. The driver of the pickup truck is expected to survive.
The driver of the SUV, 47-year-old North Pole resident William Powell was declared deceased at the scene. The SUV was also occupied by two adult females who were injured in the collision and transported to a Fairbanks area hospital, both with non-life-threatening injuries.
The road conditions in the area were icy at the time of the collision. Alcohol or drugs do not appear to be a factor in the collision. No charges or citations have been issued at this time. Next of kin has been notified. The Richardson Highway was fully closed for approximately two hours and experienced further intermittent lane closures until approximately 1:55 pm.
