State Blocks Helping Students With High College Loans

Alaska, April 2024

Eleven Republican-led states say that if college graduates with huge student loans take advantage of a federal program to give them monetary relief – including basing monthly payments on their income – this will harm the states.

Alaska is one of those states. The states say that people with loan relief won't go into public service and will leave their jobs – including as teachers, according to an ADN report.

Currently teachers are already under siege in Alaska. But for different reasons. They are being involuntarily fired and their schools are being shuttered in places like Fairbanks.

In the Mat-Su Borough, which has the second largest school district in the state, 105 full time staff are expected to be laid off in 2024-2025, due, apparently, to the state's continuing troubles with coming up with a predictable budget.
