Crews complete key work as Nelchina Glacier Fire reaches 19% containment
The Nelchina Glacier Fire (#226), located approximately 3 miles south of the Eureka Roadhouse, remains 3,920 acres and is now 19% contained. There are currently 69 personnel assigned to the fire.
Fire crews have completed mop-up to the 100-foot standard on both the east and west sections of the fire. All hose and equipment have been backhauled to staging, and the Southwest #4 Crew was successfully extracted and is scheduled to demobilize this afternoon. With major suppression objectives met, the fire has been consolidated, and all remaining resources in the field are expected to leave the fireline today.
A Resource Advisor (READ) is currently supporting suppression repair planning, the phase that follows fire suppression and focuses on minimizing long-term impacts to the land. The READ is helping evaluate options such as flattening berms, scattering soil and vegetation across dozer lines, and preserving existing local trails. These actions help stabilize soil, reduce erosion, and support the natural recovery of the landscape. Preserving social trails also ensures continued access for local land users
Burn Suspension Reminder: A burn suspension remains in effect for the Mat-Su, Copper River, and Kenai-Kodiak areas. This precaution helps ensure firefighting resources remain available for ongoing wildfires across the region.
