Central Vietnam is reeling from the most severe flooding in decades. Khanh, Chairman of Hearts for Hue wrote to me, advising that 1.739.6 meters (68.5") of rain fell in 24 hours on Bach Ma Mountain, situated just outside Hue. This is the greatest rainfall ever recorded in Central Vietnam. The result was immediate and devastating. Hue City and outlying villages were inundated with 1-2 meters and more. Over 44,000 homes were flooded at a depth of .5 to 2 meters and greater. In all of Central Vietnam, 128,000 homes were flooded, electricity knocked out, and livestock, crops, and aquaculture seriously affected. Classrooms were flooded, schools closed, and school supplies destroyed. This record rainfall was followed by more precipitation, bringing Hue's 2-week total to 2.452 meters (96.54"). It's a catastrophic situation. Hearts for Hue's office was terribly flooded and most electronics destroyed.

Facilitated by Khanh ( Hearts for Hue), we funded relief for 100 families in three flood-stricken villages yesterday. In each village, representatives of the Vietnam Women's Union selected the families with the most critical need. Priority is given to:

-Poor and near-poor families

-Families with elderly, children, or people with disabilities

-Households that suffered severe property damage

Khanh and I agreed that the best approach is to provide each family with funds with which to purchase essential needs. I confirmed that there are small stores operating on higher ground that are accessible to these villagers. Each family received 500,000 VND, which is about $20 USD. It's not a lot, but it'll help out tremendously in the short term. Here are items that would typically be purchased with the funds that we provided:

150,000 VND - 10 kg bag of rice

120,000 VND - 1 box noodles

 75,000 VND - 1 liter cooking oil & seasonings

25,000 VND - 1 kg sugar

30,000 VND - 1 liter fish sauce

100,000 VND - 1 kg seasoning powder

500,000 VND

We provided assistance to these villages yesterday:

Huong Tra (25 Families)

Dan Bien (25 Families)

Quang Dien (50 Families)

And later this week we will assist 50 households in Kim Tra village. Next week, as the water hopefully recedes, we'll begin chicken distribution. That will be a major step in folks getting back on track with a source of food and income.

I will provide photos and the names of the recipients of yesterday's distribution in the following posts.

Thanks to your caring support, we were able to react swiftly and dig right in. We're just getting started, folks. Helping & Healing.

FLOOD UPDATE: Thanks to your quick and generous pledges, I was able to transfer $1,000 to Khanh at Hearts for Hue this evening. We will be providing emergency supplies to 50 families in Dan Dien village, which is still inundated by flood water (See photos below). I can't thank you enough for reacting to this serious situation. I'll keep you updated as Khanh coordinates our aid to Dan Dien. I'm hoping to be able to expand our assistance in the days to come. Thank you!
