REPORT FROM THE KENNECOTT TRANSPORTATION STUDY
NOVEMBER 4TH, 2026

What is the Kennecott Transportation Study?

The Kennecott Transportation Study will build upon the McCarthy Road PEL and other past work and existing efforts (including the 2013 Kennecott Operations and Management Plan and updates, the recent 2024 Kennecott Mines National Historic Landmark Management Strategy for NPS Managed Lands, and the NPS’ ongoing emergency evacuation planning effort). The study will inform future transportation and access planning in and around Kennecott.

The study seeks to identify opportunities to improve transportation and visitor access while protecting Kennecott's historic character, cultural resources, and scenic setting. Recommendations may address parking, pedestrian connections, multimodal travel, wayfinding, and access to key destinations throughout the Kennicott Valley.

Throughout the process, the study will align with the NPS Facility Investment Strategy pillars of “invest in our heritage” and “invest in our visitors.” Our goal will be to meet local needs while also stewarding national trust for access to this important area.
