National Weather Service Gives Flooding Alert At Manley Hot Springs

There is major flooding at Manley Hot Springs due to spring breakup of the Tanana River.

The National Weather Service has issued major flood warnings for the Hot Springs and its neighboring town. The Weather Service office in Fairbanks says that there's been significant flooding in the town and water levels are at a foot below the bottom of the bridge.

According to the Weather Service "this is a historic flood" and is the highest water level in at least 45 years, approaching "the record flood of 1956."

Flood warnings at Manley Hot Springs are in effect until 6 pm on Sunday.

News stories say that up to 75 residents – at least half of the entire town –are evacuating.

The State Emergency Operations Center is responding to the flooding, along with Tanana Chiefs Conference, Civil Air Patrol, the National Weather Service, the VPSO and the Alaska State Troopers.
