Gathering On Flag Day In Glennallen

Story To The Journal By Mary Odden

Around 30 Copper River residents gathered at the Glennallen Courthouse Saturday to celebrate Flag Day and to protest recent actions made by the Trump administration.

Signs expressed support for public employees and programs, lawful immigration, voting rights and the Veterans Administration — all areas where disruptive changes have been made. Several participants read testimonies about the erosion of American institutions and the rule of law.

One personal testimony described an illegal ICE arrest and detention of a family member. Mostly longtime residents of the Basin, those speaking asked people to try and find common ground with other citizens in order to effectively solve specific problems and to peaceably resist what they see as a rising autocratic state.

Today's event was held concurrently with similar protests across Alaska and the nation.
