Glenn Highway's 200-Foot Dropoffs – With No Guardrails – Are A Constant Source Of Legitimate Anxiety & Fear For Drivers

Citizen Group Pinpoints Dozens Of "Bad" Sites On Glenn Where They Believe Carl Degross May Have Gone Over The Cliff

September 14th, 2025

A 33-year old Anchorage man has apparently not yet made it back home from a Valdez fishing trip, and most likely drove off the Glenn Highway between Glennallen and Palmer, into the massive, often unprotected ravine between the highway and the Matanuska River.

Carl Degross was reported missing on the evening of September 8th, 2025 – six days ago. He was last seen at the Hub around midnight on the 7th, headed to Palmer in his 2019 red Dodge Ram. Troopers had searched for him and reported on September 9th that patrol cars and planes didn't find him.

Citizen patrols of concerned friends and family began running the Glenn, looking for him

There Are A Number Of Well-Known Incidents Of Cars Hurtling Over The Edge Into The Canyon Between Palmer & Glennallen

Copper Valley people are well versed in the horrific tales of falling into the canyon off the Glenn Highway. It's happened for decades.

Over 60 years ago, Pop Miller of the Copper Valley didn't return home one winter night. His wife, Augusta, went out to look for him along the empty Glenn with her son-in-law, Arnold Engebretson. They scoured the edge of the highway until she saw a place at Caribou Creek Canyon where she thought a car had gone over. Grabbing a flashlight, Augusta (who was not young) scrambled down the steep canyon walls, and found him alive in an overturned car. She sent Arnold back for help. Pop Miller had a broken wrist and frostbite. He was taken to Palmer, and the doctor there said he was sure to die. Nevertheless, Pop Miller didn't die, and eventually went to Faith Hospital in Glennallen, where Dr. Schneider strapped his arm down on a 2x4 and cut off his frozen fingers, saving his life.

In November, 2005, 20 years ago, 32-year-old Stephanie Brenden was returning with her very small children from Anchorage. She called home from Palmer, and then disappeared. Near Mile 95, her blue 1998 Ford Expedition slid along a guardrail for 100 feet, and hurtled down into the canyon. When she didn't arrive home, her husband, Erik, drove the highway, looking for her in the driving snow. He finally saw a tiny piece of blue debris on a guardrail. He stopped, yelled her name, and down by the river below Victory Bible Camp, she called back. She had abandoned the car in the trees, and with her children, slid down to the bottom of the steep valley, where she had lain on the snowy ground with her kids on top of her, and waited. With the help of local people along the highway, Erik saved her life. Stephanie and the children were out in the elements for around 9 hours, Trooper reports said.

On December 28th, 2024, a year ago, and a few days after Christmas, a red Ford Escape drove off the Glenn and over the cliff near Mile 92. There were two people in it – a 79-year old woman and a 23-year old man. They went 150 feet down the embankment and were rescued by Mat-Su volunteers using a sled and a rope to pull them out.
