Tazlina Water Quality Statement By DEC
LINK: PFAS EXPLAINED
Tazlina's water pump quality is under analysis. The Department of Environmental Conservation sent the following statement and explanatory graphics to the Country Journal the week of September 17th, 2025:
Routine sampling by the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation’s Drinking Water Program detected PFOS, a type of PFAS, in the Tazlina water system at levels above the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s new Maximum Contaminant Level of 4 parts per trillion.Under EPA’s rule, public water systems across the country are currently in a monitoring phase. Systems have three years to complete monitoring and five years to make any treatment or source changes needed to meet the standards.EPA sets these standards to guide water system operators in protecting public health. Exceeding a standard does not mean immediate health impacts but does require the operator to take steps within the compliance timeline. Residents who have concerns may choose to use bottled water or certified filters while long-term solutions are developed. As part of standard protocol, DEC notified the Tazlina system operator, who is responsible for informing users and determining next steps. DEC will continue to provide technical assistance as the operator evaluates options.
