Alaska Is Dependent On Federal Funding

Federal funding for grants and loans to Native American tribes across the nation has been frozen by the U.S. government.  On Monday, January 27th, the White House announced the decision to shut down all federal grants and loans across America.

Social Security and Medicare payments are exempted.

On the morning of Tuesday, January 28th – it was unclear in Alaska what effect this would have on all the federally funded projects in the state, and across the nation – or how long the freeze would last.

INDIAN COUNTRY

Alaska has a sizable indigenous Native American population. It's in what is known as "Indian Country" and has a broad range of federally funded programs that are sure to be affected by this decision.

The national news website, Indian Country Today (or ICT), noted on Tuesday morning that the 2024 Indian Affairs budget was $47.7 billion.

It quoted Aaron Payment, former leader at the National Congress of American Indians:

"It's hard to read what the impact will be. But, the immediate concern is that our funding is at risk.”

Many other federally-funded grants and loans throughout America that provide funding for programs involving millions of people  are also part of this freeze.
