Copper River EMS was not notified or dispatched to the recent. It must have been Delta medical transport that was dispatched from Delta Junction to provide medical care and transport.
On March 8, 2025, Alaska State Troopers received a report around 6 p.m. that a snowmachiner had plunged into a crevasse at “No Name Glacier” near Paxson.
Paxson is 72 miles from Glennallen. It's 80 miles from Delta Junction. Paxson is at the eastern entrance to the Denali Highway off the Richardson – and near the recreational area of Summit Lake and the site of the Arctic Man winter sports events. When Paxson Lodge was fully functioning, it was a substation of the Gakona Post Office, in the Copper River Valley.
In response to a request for information from the Alaska State Troopers, the Communication Department sent the Journal the following on Thursday, March 13th:
We did not post a dispatch on that incident, but here are a few details: On March 8, 2025, Alaska State Troopers received a report around 6 p.m. that a snowmachiner was in a crevasse of “No Name Glacier.” As troopers prepared to respond to the scene, they received notification that a group of good Samaritans in the area provided assistance and rescued the man from the crevasse. He was then transported to an awaiting ambulance for medical evaluation. He sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Thanks for reaching out!
In response to follow-up questions by the Journal, about where the Samaritans and ambulance came from, Trooper Communications wrote:
The group of good Samaritans were also recreating in the area. I don't have info about where the ambulance responded from.
It is not clear whether the medical evaluation took place in an ambulance, but March 8th, the day of the accident, was a Saturday.
In the Copper Valley, to the south, Cross Road Medical Center in Glennallen and the Robert Marshall medical facility in Glennallen are both closed on Saturdays.
In Delta Junction, to the north, according to the web there are three medical clinics. The Delta Junction Family Medical Center in Big Delta on Service Road is listed on the web as closed on Saturdays. Also in Delta, The "Family Medical Center" on Remington Road is listed as closed on Saturdays.
The Interior Alaska Medical Clinic, on the Alaska Highway in Delta, is listed on the web as open from 10 am to 5 pm on Saturdays. The incident happened at 6 pm – which would put it in the after-hour closure time.
Much of the information known about the rescue comes from the men who arrived on the scene and winched the unnamed stranded man out of the 60-foot deep crevasse – and then shared it with the media in Anchorage. The story had apparently not made it into the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner by March 14th. Yet the incident's location, near Arctic Man, puts it squarely into a recreational area that is frequently used by Fairbanks snowmachiners.
KTUU in Anchorage has extended its stories for Fairbanks listeners, with more Fairbanks-related content. KTUU did pick up the story, with details from the passing snowmachiners who made the rescue.
