Canadians Don't Have Egg Shortages

Canadians are not suffering from an egg shortage – or high egg prices. According to news reports, a food economist in Ontario is quoted as saying, "We have not had any shortage of eggs. We can choose from 14 different types of eggs."

The economist added,"I get calls from reporters here in Canada and they say, 'We're hearing all this about eggs,' and I say, 'Well, that's in the U.S. It's not happening here.'"

The impact on the egg supply from avian flu, which plagues Canada, too, is far less than in the U.S. to the south.

Mainly, they think because a typical egg farm in Canada has 25,000 hens. A typical egg farm in the U.S. has millions. So culling an entire "sick" batch of chickens in Canada is not as dire.

Also, due to the cold weather, Canadian farmers keep a tighter lid on their hen houses, keeping out wild birds.
