Wrangell-St. Elias Warns Of Landslide On Lakina River

PRESS RELEASE FROM THE PARK SERVICE

June, 2025

Photo of landslide as shown on NPS Facebook site.

A recently observed landslide across the Lakina River in Wrangell-St. Elias is creating a debris hazard on a popular packrafting route. The Lakina River was inundated by landslide debris just upstream of the Fohlin Creek confluence.

The river water is cutting its way through, but is highly dynamic and should be expected to remain that way through the boating season. Hazards to boaters are significant and include numerous strainers at and downstream of the landslide site.

Boaters: Be situationally aware! All waters in Wrangell-St. Elias are everchanging. Conditions will continue to evolve and change over the coming days and weeks.
