On D-Day, June 6th, 1944, 150,000 troops from the traditional English-speaking northern hemisphere – Canada, Britain and the United States – stormed the beaches of German-occupied France.
They daringly landed, in secret, on five beaches in Normandy, France, in landing craft. The men waded a long distance, unshielded, through the seawater, fully-uniformed. Many were shot down by the Germans who were positioned on the hills above them. They died in the water and their bodies washed up onto the beaches as the soldiers who were still alive had to go past them, and onward to the cliffs of Normandy.
D-Day is considered by many to be the high point of American courage, and a turning point in World War II in Europe.
On June 5th, 2025, the chancellor of Germany thanked America for our country's role in liberating the German people from the Nazis.
