Copper Valley History: Frank Ewan's 1936 Food Cache On The Banks Of The Copper River

The people of the Copper Valley have used and processed salmon for generations. In 1936, Frank Ewan, the father of the late Harding Ewan of Gulkana, built this hand-hewn axed-timber cache.

By the time this photograph was taken, in the 1980s, the cache still had a roof on it, and stood in the village fish camp, facing the Copper River bluffs where Frank Ewan used to trap.
