July 9th, 2026:

The U.S. Secretary of Transportation wants to ban funding bike lanes as not within the guidelines of government standards. He considers making bike lanes "a problem... at the expense of vehicles."

The Secretary says that spending $1.7 billion for safe bike lanes, under money earmarked by the previous administration, is part of an effort at "DEI" which is now banned by the current administration.

The letters DEI, roughly interpreted, are tied to the words "Diversity", "Equity" and "Inclusion". Another form of saying something is DEI is calling it "woke", a term that refers to extreme progressive ideologies.
