Glacier View Car Launch Is An Annual 4th Of July Event Since 2005 On Road To Copper Valley

It's 5:10 pm on the 4th of July at Glacier View, Alaska. This is a very small portion of the up to 10,000 people who drove out of Anchorage to the scenic Matanuska Glacier to try to see a yearly event in which junk cars are blasted into a steep ravine. (Photo, Copper River Country Journal)

City dwellers had driven out for the day, through construction zones, for over 100 miles over the frightening Glenn Highway to Glacier View, to try to get a glimpse of the annual 4th of July Glacier View Car launch. By 2:30 pm, though, thousands were already streaming back to town, in convoys of unending traffic, weaving their way back down the Glenn toward Sutton and Palmer. Apparently, they had already had enough and decided it was better to turn back. These photos show the ones who stayed to see the whole show through.

The new road repaving project, taking place on Long Lake Hill this summer, has pushed the edge of the highway right to the embankment, giving an unnerving view of the drop-offs to passengers headed north.

A Mat-Su ambulance was stuck in the southbound lane – along with several large commercial trucks headed with freight to Anchorage.
