On 9/15/22, the Alaska Wildlife Troopers responded to a report of a cow moose taken in the upper Gakona River. The subsequent investigation revealed Donald Beals, age 64 of Anchorage, Jessie Beals, age 40 of Anchorage, and Josh Delaney, age 31 of Big Lake were involved in the unlawful take of the cow moose, and the subsequent failure to salvage of all of the rib meat. Donald Beals was charged with unlawful possession and transportation, Jessie Beals was charged with unlawfully taking a cow moose, failure to salvage, and unlawful possession and transportation. Arraignment is set for 10/4/22 in Glennallen District Court.

On 10/4/22, Jessie Beals pled guilty in Glennallen Court to unlawfully taking a cow moose and failing to salvage. Count 3, unlawful possession of game was dismissed. Jessie Beals was sentenced to pay a fine of $2500 for taking the cow moose, and ordered to pay $1000 in restitution. He was ordered to pay a $500 fine for the count of failing to salvage all of the required meat. The meat from the unlawfully taken moose was ordered forfeited as well as the rifle used in the take. Donald Beals pled guilty as charged to one count of unlawful possession of game and was ordered to forfeit the meat in his possession from the unlawfully taken moose and to pay a fine of $1000.
