Red Flag Warnings for Copper River Basin and Tok Cutoff Today, Delta Area Tomorrow

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for today, Wednesday, August 6th, from 1:00 PM to 9:00 PM for the Copper River Basin extending to the Tok Cutoff. Hot, dry, and windy conditions are expected, creating a high risk for new fires to ignite and for existing fires to spread rapidly.

A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are occurring or are about to occur. In Alaska, this means warm temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds are combining with dry fuels (like grass and dead trees) to create a high risk of wildfire.

This warning is also in effect for the Delta area tomorrow, Thursday, August 7th, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Red Flag warning for Copper River, Tok Cutoff and Delta areas.

Fire Prevention is key! Please use extreme caution with anything that could spark a fire.

  • Avoid burning. Check for burn bans or restrictions in your area.
  • Be careful with equipment. Do not use equipment that may emit sparks, such as chainsaws or lawnmowers, especially in dry, grassy areas.
  • Properly dispose of cigarettes. Never throw cigarette butts on the ground or out of a vehicle.
  • Extinguish campfires completely. Drown them with water, stir the ashes, and feel for any remaining heat. If it’s too hot to touch, it’s too hot to leave.

There are no burn suspensions at this time, but please check with your local area before you burn.
