As the last hours before signing up for Don Young's seat wrapped up on Friday, even the Alaska Division of Elections website couldn't keep up.

The state website had kept up a running tally for the public, and updated its totals regularly. But the official tab stopped for awhile at 3:36 pm, and wouldn't budge. It stayed at 40 candidates for several hours, even after 5 o'clock – the deadline for signing up – came and went.

Meanwhile, the Anchorage Daily News' ongoing report plowed along. Somewhere in the chaos of the final minutes, Emil Notti, a lifelong Democrat and first president of the Alaska Federation of Natives, was said to have signed up. And also, Sarah Palin was about to take the plunge, the ADN reported.

But the Alaska Division of Elections website stayed static, locked in at 3:36 pm. Then, at 5:18 pm, the state's website lunged into action, sending out another report.

Forty-three people had signed up in total (a few of them not even Alaskans.) One candidate, Santa Claus, was arguably not even a human being. Sarah Palin was not on the 5:18 pm list. Emil Notti was.

Also on the list were Tom Gibbons of Glennallen, and Jason Williams of Copper Center.

Then, at 6:07 pm, yet another official report came out. There were now 51 candidates, and Sarah Palin had become one of them.

Here's the final list from the state as of 6:07 pm:
