Cold Enough For You? Better Hang On To Your Hat!

The Weather Service Has This To Say:

Temperatures will continue to fall each day. Calm winds starting Friday may allow temperatures to drop to 55 to 60 below in some areas Saturday and Sunday.

Looking Back At Other Miserable Weather.

January, 1996 had 18 consecutive days where the warmest KCAM  got at night was -43 below zero. Not to worry – highs in the day generally went up to 30 to 35 below for an hour or two.

In 1996, schools were closed when the KCAM thermometer read -50 or colder at 5 am. Winter's death grip finally broke on Tuesday, January 30th. By then, Copper Valley people called "Time & Temperature" 104,000 times.

In 1996 the Copper River Valley called NOAA in Valdez.

Lynn Chrystal, who ran the National Weather Service in Valdez at that time described the problem:

“What’s causing this whole thing is the reverse of El Niño. During El Niño years, Alaska tends to be quite warm and wet. We’ve had a big high pressure that’s more or less dominated the mainland of Alaska for some time now. It’s extended down from Siberia, across Alaska,  and into northwestern Canada. That’s been the cause of our dry weather.”
