Tazlina Native Village is working to buy the property of the old Copper Valley School, which is in Tazlina on what were once traditional lands.

The property covers 462 acres. Used as a Catholic boarding school, the site was known throughout Alaska, and educated many boarders who came to the Copper Valley from throughout Alaska. Closed in 1971, the school burned down in 1976.

Tazlina Village has finished an EPA and Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation-approved cleanup of the site, and intends to buy back the land, which was used as a summer fish camp in the ancient past. The village will use it for cultural purposes.

Tazlina had raised $76,000 of its $250,000 goal by the end of January, 2021, and has until October, 2021 to raise more funds. The village has plans for turning the spot into a gathering place for Ahtna people, adults who once attended Copper Valley School, and visitors.

The site would work on fisheries research. It will also host a tribal college, a community hall and cultural center, a church hall and a community garden.

If you'd like to help Tazlina recover its homelands, and build a place of education and tradition (and assist leveraging money to buy back the site) here's further information:
