Crews continue Starry Fire containment as rain hits
Firefighters are continuing work on the 547-acre Starry Fire (#234) as wet weather moves in. With 70% containment, crews have been cutting jack straw, removing fallen trees and using water to extinguish hot spots.
On Friday, firefighters worked to extinguish two spot fires on the northwest corner of the fire and one on the southeast corner. On the southwest corner of the fire, a smoking dozer berm was doused with water. Crews will grid this area again Saturday to ensure no heat remains.

Saturday’s goals include finishing a helispot on the fire and cold trailing sections of the western perimeter to 200 feet. Crews will also be digging up and soaking ash pits and removing jack straw, removing heat and fuel. The east and west sides of the fire will be connected by cutting lines through its interior allowing for firefighters to easily access different parts of the fire.
Saturday morning, isolated thunderstorms will transition to more widespread rain showers this afternoon. The precipitation will bring with it cooler temperatures with highs in the 60s forecast through Tuesday. Gusty outflow winds remain possible with today’s isolated thunderstorms. Overall, winds will be low with sustained southwesterly winds weakening below 15 miles per hour. The forecasted weather this weekend will moderate fire behavior.
The Starry Fire was reported on June 20th and currently has 164 people staffed.
