SURGE: Covid In The Copper Valley
For weeks there seems to have been little new Covid activity in the Copper River Valley. That seems to have changed, with the arrival of the dangerous new "delta variant".
As of 8:15 am, Thursday, July 22nd, the Copper River Native Association did not have updated figures for numbers of new Covid cases in the region.
But, CRNA did confirm on Thursday morning that there had been a recent increase in testing at the Robert Marshall facility in Tazlina. Vaccination rates in the Copper Valley are low, with only 1 out of 3 people vaccinated. Assuming a population base of around 2,500 people, it appears that the region has a vaccinated population of only 30%, which is considered very low in the United States of America, which offers free shots to all adults everywhere.
According to Jim Godin at CRNA, in an interview last week, between 800 and 900 people in the region have been vaccinated by the organization.
This small percentage of vaccinated people in the Copper Valley means that this region, and our neighborhoods, are particularly vulnerable to the delta variant, which is spreading rapidly in rural areas across the United States where vaccination rates are below 40%.
If this region follows the pattern of the rest of the United States, the Copper Valley could soon be part of the nationwide spike of delta variant Covid.
Tazlina Village closed its offices, and so has Ahtna. CRNA has cancelled its youth trip to the World Eskimo-Indian Olympics due to Covid.
