A survey by Consumer Affairs says that New Hampshire, Minnesota and Vermont have the best roads in America. The worst roads, they say, are in Hawaii, Rhode Island and Louisiana. Alaska is not on the top ten list of "worst roads." Eighteen states are listed as having worse roads than we have.

Alaska, with its miles of winding, shoulderless two-lane mountain "highways" and its major dirt roads — including the Denali Highway, the Dalton Highway, the McCarthy Road — comes in 19th from the bottom this year on the list of bad roads in America.

This is a major drop from last year, when Consumer Affairs placed Alaska's highways in the top tier of America's highways. Last year, they said 36 states had worse roads than Alaska does.

Here are some DOT photos of Alaska roads in the past few years, as taken from the archives of the Copper River Country Journal.
