The Greater Copper Valley Chamber of Commerce held its annual meeting on Thursday evening, October 24th, at Tolsona Lake Resort. This is the organization’s 37th year. The Chamber was started in the economic downturn of 1986-87. It’s a volunteer organization, run with no tax support, and has modest membership fees. The Chamber invites any business to join, no matter how small.

Bruce Cain – Board Member Award

Bruce Cain was recognized for his many years of service on the Chamber Board in different roles as President, Board Secretary and Treasurer. He was also recognized for his many contributions to the community in various organizations. Most recently he has been the chair of the Copper Valley RPO and has submitted community priorities on how DOT infrastructure money can meet the needs of Copper Valley Residents.

Carol Neeley & CBS Services  – Longevity Award

CBS Services has the best 4th of July loot. Toilet Paper!  They donate to many community events throughout the year. Carol Neeley is a bedrock of this community and we are so blessed to have her here. Copper Basin Sanitation has been a Chamber member since its formation. Sy was on the 1st board and CBS volunteers to help at all community events whether it’s filling sandbags or supporting our volunteer organizations. The Chamber appreciates their dedication to our community.

Copper Valley Telecom – Community Improvement Award

This Community Improvement Award went to Copper Valley Telecom for designing, acquiring funding for and implementing a "State of The Art" Fiber Optic Network that covers many miles across the Copper River Valley and Valdez. Along with the fiber goes a complex wireless system of technology and devices that we have become dependent on to maintain our daily lives and our business ventures. The available services this project has created is world class and keeps our area in a competitive and ever changing environment known as the "World Wide Web or Internet". The services that Copper Valley Telecom provides and professionally supports with their staff are some of the best In the business.

Michels Underground Cable  – Community Support Award

This Community Support Award went to Michels Underground Cable for their professionalism and quality of work during the past 17 years, supporting Copper Valley Telecom's fiber optic project.

They employ the best in the business and bring much to our local economy by utilizing our local services and even employing locals for hire.

The amount of fiber cables they put underground along the utility corridors, right up to a business or residence, and in some of the more challenging areas in the Copper Valley, is impressive and respectable. We hope that their support and participation will continue for as many years or more as it has.

Over 10,000 Visitors Came Into
The
Visitor Center This Summer

The Chamber operates the visitor center at the Hub. It’s a huge effort. This summer, 10,543 visitor were clicked off as they came through the door, to ask about businesses, activities, and services in the surrounding Copper River Valley.

By any standards for a small visitor center or museum in rural Alaska, that’s a good-sized number for the summer. In many other communities, visitor center numbers are driven up because the people who come into the building are actually just looking for a bathroom. Our lack of bathroom facilities actually leads to a higher-quality visitor. Only those who are truly interested in genuine information about the region come in the door.

Many stay for quite a while, talking with the staff members —  most often Dale Oja, Shirley Cain, Melinda Tobey, Emilie Frisbie, Wendy Wood and Marilyn Walker. Kathy Stratton is the office manager.

July is the biggest month for visitors, followed closely by June and August. Over half of all people who come in are U.S. residents. Canadians and Germans are next. Of US citizens who enter the Chamber Visitor Center, the largest numbers come from Alaska – followed by California, Texas and Florida.
