On March 1st, 2nd and 3rd in 1963, Gulkana Village, sponsored by the Alaska Native Brotherhood, held sled dog races on the river. The races were known as the "Copper Valley Championship Sled Dog Races" and proceeds went "to Worthwhile Causes."

Hector Ewan was the spokesman, and there were also raffles and snowshoe races.
