Country Journal Honors Katie John of Mentasta

The Power Of Doing What's Right

Katie John, who spearheaded subsistence rights from Mentasta, on the northern boundary of Ahtna Country, was a most unlikely champion against injustice.

She was gentle, motherly and traditional...  She lived in a small village, off the highway. She was worried about feeding her family.

Yet when push came to shove, Katie John accomplished incredible things. She stepped forward to right wrongs. Not because she wanted fame or recognition, but, as she herself said, because it was within her abilities.

She knew she could do it. She felt it had to be done. And she was unafraid.
