Worked As Assistant To Two Alaska Governors 

Anchorage resident Trudy Cain, age 88, passed away July 31, 2022, surrounded by family members.

Trudy was born in Toledo, Ore. and grew up there. She graduated Salutatorian of her high school class in 1952. She later completed classes at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and the Mat-Su Community College in Palmer, Alaska majoring in Journalism.

She met her future husband, John Cain in Toledo and the couple married in June 1954. They lived for 15 years in the Dalles, Ore., before moving to Alaska in 1969 when her husband accepted a job with the Alaska Division of Corrections. While in The Dalles, Trudy was active in many organizations including the Jay-C-Ettes, Weed Beaters Garden Club, and the local Duplicate Bridge Club. Their three children were born in the Dalles and Trudy was a stay-at home mom while they were very young.

After that, she resumed her career as a legal secretary and worked for the Alaska State Legislature when the family moved to Alaska. She then served as the Executive Secretary to Governor William A. Egan 1970-74. Her family moved to Fairbanks in 1974 where her husband served as Northern Regional Administrator for the Department of Corrections.

Trudy held several positions during her fifteen years in Fairbanks. She was Assistant to the Director of the Geophysical Institute, University of Alaska, Fairbanks; Director of the Fairbanks Legislative Information Office; and as Special Assistant to Governor Bill Sheffield. She retired in 1986. After retirement she and her husband moved to Wasilla and then to Anchorage. Her hobbies were playing Bridge, cooking, entertaining friends and family, fishing, and traveling with her husband in their motor home. She was a member of the Wasilla Garden Club, the Anchorage Newcomers/Longtimers Club and the Anchorage Bridge Center.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Cain; her parents; grandson, Joseph Cain; six sisters and two brothers. Survivors include her son, Alan and wife, Lynda; son, Bruce and wife, Shirley; daughter, Paula Gray and husband, Brian; sixteen grandchildren and 37 great grandchildren; sister, Elsie Gibson; brother, Edson Gilmore; and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held at Radiant Church, 3102 Boniface Pkwy, Anchorage, AK 99504, at 4:00 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 7, 2022.

Contributions in her name may be made to the Anchorage Salvation Army or to the Anchorage Salvation Army Serendipity Day Care Services.
