On August 4th the Copper River School District announced that School Superintendent Therese Ashton was leaving the school district as of August 6th, 2022. It was only a few weeks before school was due to start.
The District Board said it was "seeking candidates to serve as interim and permanent superintendent."
The board wrote:
"We thank Ms. Therese Ashton for her service to the District and wish her well. Ms. Theresa Laville, Assistant Superintendent, will be assuming the duties of superintendent and be the main point of contact for the District while the search is conducted."
Superintendent Ashton graduated from high school in Fairbanks. She was a school superintendent and principal in Tanana. She was principal in Wrangell. She came to the Copper Valley as the pandemic began, two years ago.
According to the school's Facebook site, there was a Friday, July 29th Special Board meeting. An executive session involving "Superintendent Performance Review" and an Action item, "Superintendent Employment Contract" were apparently considered.
New teacher orientation starts on August 15th. School starts on August 23rd.
