A Juneau elementary school summer program fed children liquid floor sealant for breakfast instead of milk on Tuesday, June 14th.
A dozen children drank the floor sealant at Sitʼ Eeti Shaanáx̱ Glacier Valley Elementary School. They immediately began complaining.
According to a national story on NBC news, both the milk and sealant were stored off-site, and both arrived on the same pallet at the school. Apparently both products came in plastic bags. The sealant is "milk-colored."
The school notified poison control and parents.
NANA Management Services (NMS), of Anchorage, is contracted to provide the food services at the school.
On its website, NMS says its food service programs include catering, corporate dining, healthcare services, education services and. restaurant management.
NANA's food services, according to its site, began in 1974 when the catering company worked with the Pipeline providing food on the North Slope. In 1986, it began working with Marriott hotels, and in 1997 opened a number of Marriotts in Alaska.
NANA's slogans are "Trusted by clients for more than 45 years" and "Safety guides our behavior" according to NANA's website.
According to NBC News, NANA has sent a safety team to Juneau, and says: "We are in the midst of a comprehensive investigation that will look at every contributing factor to determine exactly what happened and to identify potential safety measures."
NANA is an Alaska regional corporation composed of Inupiat shareholders. Its headquarters are in Kotzebue.
