UPDATE:
And it's a wrap. Brent Sass has won the CB300 this year just 2 minutes ahead of Jessie Holmes, who almost caught up in the last few miles of the race.
They were followed by Cody Strathe who crossed the finish line just 35 minutes later.
Brent Sass finished the 2024 Copper Basin 300 after 2 days, 5 hours, and 18 minutes, pulling into Glennallen at 3:18:25 on Monday, January 15th.
Jessie Holmes finished the 2024 Copper Basin 300 after 2 days, 5 hours, and 20 minutes, pulling into Glennallen at 3:20:06 on Monday, January 15th.
There have been closer CB300 finishes.
One that comes to mind was the 1994 race finish at Chistochina when Will Forsburg beat Martin Buser by a sled length.
In those days before digital time keeping, both were given an official time of 10:50 pm. They were followed a minute later by Jason Baron, with a time of 10:51 pm.
And to top that, local musher John Schandelmeier crossed two minutes later, with an official time of 10:53.
All the mushers chasing Will Forsberg had turned off their headlamps in hopes that he would think he was well ahead of them and slow down just a little bit.
It all happened so fast, as the mushers seemingly appeared by magic out of the darkness -- one, two, three, then four.
This kept the crowd at the chute screaming and KCAM announcers Darrel Schierholt and Carlyle Callis breathless.
Susan Butcher, who had already won the CB300 twice, finished in 9th place an hour and 20 minutes later, with a young training team.
1:51 pm Monday Afternoon –
Leaders run along Richardson Highway to finish line.
You can watch the teams as they turn the corner at Mile 127 and head to the finish line in Glennallen. It should be an exciting finish, as Brent Sass and Jessie Holmes have picked up the pace and are running neck-and-neck with Jessie Holmes just slightly behind. They ran at over 9 miles an hour as they hit the downhill stretch to the highway. The teams will slow once they start down the Richardson.
